Legend has it that in the late 18th century, a small group of Native Americans robbed the flocks of the San Luis Rey Mission. Evading pursuit by Spanish troops, they found refuge in the hills. In 1797, Spanish soldiers stumbled upon a fertile valley during their chase, naming it Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of Saint Mark) to commemorate the discovery on April 25, St. Mark’s Day.
