Prior to European colonization, Native Americans inhabited northeastern Massachusetts for millennia. The Massachusett and Naumkeag peoples lived south of the Merrimack River, while the Pennacooks resided to the north. The area that later became North Andover was referred to as Cochichawick by the Massachusett.
In 1634, the Massachusetts General Court designated lands south of the Merrimack River, including Lake Cochichewick and the Shawsheen River, for an inland plantation. Reverend John Woodbridge, who settled the land for the English, purchased the Cochichewick Plantation on May 6, 1646, from Massachusett sachem Cutshamekin for six pounds and a coat. The plantation was incorporated as Andover, likely named after Andover, Hampshire, England, the hometown of many early settlers. Initially centered in present-day North Andover, the spread of settlement led to disputes over the location of the parish church.
In 1709, the General Court intervened, designating two parish churches, north and south. Over time, the parishes grew apart, leading to the separation of the North parish on April 7, 1855, which was then incorporated as North Andover.
