In July 1847, a group of Mormon pioneers, including John Holladay of Alabama, arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. They discovered a spring-fed stream, named Spring Creek, near what is now Kentucky Avenue. While most returned to Salt Lake City for the winter, a few men stayed, building dugouts along the stream. This marked the founding of the first village away from Salt Lake City. In spring, more families arrived to settle the area, drawn by its abundant natural resources and fertile land.
