European settlers established the Town of Arlington in 1635 as a village within Cambridge, Massachusetts, originally known as Menotomy, a term believed by some to derive from the Algonquian language, possibly meaning “swift running water,” although this interpretation is debated among linguistic anthropologists. The town expanded over time, incorporating additional land that eventually became part of Belmont, and extending towards the Mystic River, formerly part of Charlestown. This expanded area was officially incorporated as West Cambridge on February 27, 1807, supplanting the name Menotomy. In 1867, the town was renamed Arlington, as a tribute to those interred in Arlington National Cemetery, with the change taking effect on April 30 of that year.
The Massachusett tribe, a subgroup of the Algonquian Native Americans, inhabited the region around the Mystic Lakes, Mystic River, and Alewife Brook. Following the death of their chief, Nanepashemet, circa 1619, his widow, known only as “Squaw Sachem of Mistick,” assumed leadership. In 1639, she transferred the land encompassing present-day Cambridge and Watertown to the colonial settlers. She spent her final years near the west side of the Mystic Lakes, close to present-day Medford, Massachusetts, passing away sometime between 1650 and 1667.
